Tablets now have a role in our daily lives. The last time I went to the doctor, I checked in on a tablet. I’m guilty of giving my toddler a tablet occasionally, so she’ll sit still in her car seat and the cart at the grocery store.
I have tablets at my office, and my elementary schooler uses them in his library at school. As tablets have been developed in the last 15 years, the health impacts aren’t as well-known. So, I’ve found it’s worth doing my research.
It turns out that Electromagnetic Radiation (EMF) packs quite a punch, and once I read about some of the possible links to health conditions, I couldn’t get it out of my head.

2. Keep your tablet in airplane mode
Airplane mode is handy when you’re traveling, but did you know it serves other purposes too? Your tablet is constantly emitting radiation when it’s connected to WiFi and Bluetooth. When you cut off those connections, you reduce your risk.
If you’re using your iPad to read, take notes, or listen to music offline, put it in airplane mode! It’s an easy way to protect yourself against unnecessary radiation. This one might not seem super realistic. If you use your tablet like I do to occupy your kids while you drive, it’s tough to image your car without this mechanism. Yet, cars have increased radiation, which means any use of the tablet in the car is worse than it is anywhere else.
As painful as it may be, work to eliminate the tablet in the car. Give your kids’ books or small trinkets instead. Sing them songs or play old school car games. It may take getting a little creative, but at least you’ll know that everyone is staying healthy!
4. Say no to tablets in the bedroom
Many of the symptoms listed above relate to sleep issues. Stress, depression, foggy thinking, and fatigue can all be linked to sleep issues which occur because of EMF radiation. As a result, you should try to reduce your exposure while you sleep.
There are some hardcore methods of doing so, but you can also take it slow if you’re used to having many devices around you when you sleep.
In the ideal scenario, you’d have no tablets, iPads, phones or any other electronics that are plugged in in your room. You’d also turn off your electrical circuit breaker and rely on a flashlight. The same goes for turning off your WiFi (that’s right—we’re going old school).
If you hear this list and think, “Yeah, right! That’s not happening,” take it in small steps. Start by removing all your electronic devices from your sleep space. Never ever sleep with your phone by your head.
Now, again, don’t worry! When I first heard this, I was astounded. I was sleeping with my phone by my head every single night. In fact, it was practically on my face because I was using it as an alarm. Now I use an old-school alarm clock that helps me keep time without all the radiation—it’s a win-win (I promise!).
5. Purchase a bed canopy

- Fabric: For fabric, you’ll need to decide between Daylite fabric and Natural fabric. The Daylite fabric is more breathable compared to the Natural, but the Natural provides better shielding. Thus, you need to decide which is you need based on where you live (look at shielding). You also need to determine what material you like better because Daylite is polyester and Natural is cotton. If anyone in your home is allergic to certain fabric, this may make a difference.
- Shielding: Your risk depends on your location. If you don’t live near a cell phone tower or wireless transmitters, then you have a reduced risk (although you still have risk!), which means the Daylite breathable fabric might be just fine.
